I love decorating for Halloween, but I don’t love buying an entirely new collection of décor that only comes out for a few weeks. Some of my favorite seasonal decorating happens when I mix a few inexpensive finds with things I already have and give them an entirely different look.
That’s exactly what I did in our dining room this year. I wanted it a little spooky, a little magical, and still pretty, and most of it was incredibly simple.
A Spooky Chandelier Makeover
The chandelier ended up setting the mood for the whole room. I draped inexpensive black sheer Halloween fabric loosely around the arms, added a few inexpensive ravens, and switched the regular bulbs for flickering candle style bulbs.
That simple bulb change made such a difference. Once they’re glowing, the whole chandelier has this beautiful flickering candlelight effect that makes the room feel completely different.
Goodwill Jack O’ Lanterns
The jack o’ lanterns were Goodwill finds that got a quick makeover with black spray paint.
Instead of setting them directly on the table, I popped them on top of pillar candle holders I already owned and put a battery operated tea light inside each one. Giving them some height made them feel so much more substantial.
It’s one of my favorite decorating tricks, put something ordinary on a pedestal and suddenly it looks important.
Witch Hats and Dollar Tree Frames
I used a couple more pillar candle holders I already owned to prop up the witch hats in front of the mirror. The extra height makes them much more dramatic, and the mirror helps make the entire display feel fuller.
I also printed a couple of spells and slipped them into inexpensive Dollar Tree frames, just a small, magical detail mixed into the rest of the Halloween décor.
The rest was mostly things I already had, brass candlesticks, bowls, books, candle holders, a dark vase, and warm fairy lights.
And that’s probably my favorite part.
There wasn’t one big, expensive purchase that transformed this room. It’s thrifted pumpkins, a can of spray paint, inexpensive fabric, a few ravens, Dollar Tree frames, flickering lights, and things pulled from around the house.
Sometimes seasonal decorating isn’t about buying more. It’s about looking at what you already have a little differently, adding a few inexpensive touches, and layering everything together until it feels special.
A little spooky, a little magical, and still very much our home.
